What Myeongdong is like
Visit Seoul calls it “Seoul’s shopping mecca”:
- Department stores (Lotte and Shinsegae are at either end)
- Fashion chains and dozens of cosmetics shops
- Street food stalls that fill the main lanes from late afternoon
Many shopkeepers speak some English, Chinese or Japanese. It’s busy from late morning until late evening, every day.
Pros
- Central. Seoul Station is two stops away on Line 4, and the palaces and Insadong are a short subway or taxi ride.
- Walkable sights:
- Namsan Cable Car up to N Seoul Tower: about 570 m from Myeongdong Station Exit 4. Open 10:00–23:00. ₩15,000 round trip, ₩12,000 one way.
- Namdaemun Market, a huge traditional market (closed Sundays), next to Hoehyeon Station.
- Myeongdong Cathedral, Korea’s best-known Catholic cathedral.
- Easy for visitors: there’s a tourist information center at Euljiro 1-ga Station, Exit 5 (open 9:00–18:00), and every price range of hotel.
- Fair prices: Seoul city has cracked down on overcharging and forced sales in Myeongdong. Shops must display prices, and inspections are ongoing.
Cons
- Crowds: especially in the evening and at weekends.
- Touristy: restaurants and shops are aimed at visitors, and prices for street food reflect that.
- Quiet at night: once the shops shut, there’s little nightlife. Hongdae and Itaewon are the places for that.

Questions people ask
Is Myeongdong a good area to stay for a first trip to Seoul?
Yes. It's central, easy to navigate, close to Namsan, Namdaemun Market and the palaces, and staff in shops and hotels are used to foreign visitors. It's the default choice for a reason.
Is Myeongdong too touristy?
It's very touristy, especially in the evening when the street food stalls are out. If you'd rather feel like a local, stay in Jongno, Seongsu or Mapo and visit Myeongdong for an evening.
How do I get from the airport to Myeongdong?
Take the AREX train to Seoul Station and then Line 4 two stops to Myeongdong, or a taxi from Seoul Station. Some airport limousine buses also stop in the area; check the airport's bus search for the current route.
